Context

When writing about books, or anything else, I also think it is important to mention the context in which they were read: who am I, what is my work and what is my take on the world at the time of reading. A thought is always influenced by the context, so with a little bit of background you might understand a bit more about why I think the way I do and what my angle of though is.

My work

I have worked as a software developer for the last 20 years: mainly backend development, but also leading teams and lately turning more towards cloud deployment working with terraform and AWS for Oslo municipality.

Cross-competent team

I believe in the importance of building cross-competency, not just cross-disiplin within a team: once you start learning other domains you end up asking the right questions at the right time to avoid miscommunication and have the same context and knowledge about what you as a team are delivering.

  • UX should learn a little bit about infrastructure and backend
  • Infrastructure should learn a little bit about plain language and law
  • Frontend should learn a little bit about backend and product development
  • ... and so on

Nature

My connection with nature and what we do with it is deep.

Clouds

Coming from the west-coast of Norway I have grown up around nature, I have always been attached to it, but the later years realization on what we are doing to nature have brought my personal focus somewhat away from technology and towards nature.

I spend my times hiking or fishing. The connection with the river systems and running water is particulary deep.

Right now a lot of books on nature philosphy and what consequences our actions have on nature is on my reading list.

Internet and SoMe

Social media is slowly killing our joint cultural history unless we take action.

I have been administrator for one of the largest flytying groups on facebook, and it started out with good intentions: we connect inside a hobby and share. But slowly everything congregates on facebook or other social media, and it is impossible to maintain data there. In the end a group like I have been admin to could be removed, and 15 years of information is gone. This is why I have created fluebinding.no to counter this within my own hobby, but this is something that needs to be dealt with accross all communication on these platforms: our cultural history is upload and dealt with on closed platforms where nothing is possible to search for, manage or export.

You can read more about this on fluebinding.no/om/, it's norwegian, but I'll get back to translating that to english later.
